Sound Facts
1. Lots of objects make sound and the sounds are different. 2. You need a force to make a sound. 3. Sound is made by vibration. 4. When an object (matter) vibrates, sound waves start moving. 5. Sound waves can move through solids, liquids, or gases. 6. Sounds cannot transmit through a vacuum. Sounds need a state of matter to go through. 7. Sound goes fastest through solids, then liquids, and slowest through gases. Molecules in solids are close together and can easily bump into each other. 8. Hard and smooth objects reflect sound. 9. Soft and bumpy objects absorb sound. 10. Volume = Loud or Soft 11. Pitch = High or Low 12. Volume depends on the strength (force, energy, height) of sound waves. 13. Pitch depends on the frequency. Frequency is the number of vibrations per second of a sound wave. 14. Change pitch by changing length, thickness, or tension. |
