Ecology Project (Endangered Species Project) Links:
First, choose a plant or animal that is threatened or endangered in Ohio. Here are links to lists of endangered or threatened Ohio animals and plants: http://wildlife.ohiodnr.gov/portals/wildlife/pdfs/publications/information/pub356.pdf http://naturepreserves.ohiodnr.gov/rare-plants-of-ohio Next, you need to some research about your plant or animal. Here are some links to help with the questions WHY the animal/plant is in trouble and WHAT is being done to help: http://wildlife.ohiodnr.gov/species-and-habitats/species-guide-index http://www.fws.gov/midwest/endangered/saving/outreach.html http://www.fws.gov/midwest/endangered/lists/ohio-spp.html If you are having trouble finding specific information on WHAT is being done to help your animal or plant you may have to just look for laws and things that the Ohio government, US government, or everyday citizens are doing for any endangered/threatened plants/animals. http://www.endangered.org/10-easy-things-you-can-do-to-save-endangered-species/ http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/1518 http://www.fws.gov/midwest/endangered/saving/pdf/what_you_can_2008.pdf Look on the right side of this page for Ohio laws http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/1531 http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/1531.25 You also must explain how this has affected the whole ecosystem and why it is important to protect your species. Try just googling "why (put your organism here) is important to an ecosystem". Think about what would happen to the rest of the food web if your organism declines in population. Here's a quick example I found by googling (searching) about turtles: http://loggerhead-turtles.weebly.com/ecosystem.html Think about keeping an ecosystem balanced! For the ecology (endangered species) project one student used a website to create his own comic strip! see picture above

Bill Nye Food Web and Biodiversity videos are below!
- I can define the terms producers, consumers, carnivores, herbivores, omnivores, and decomposers.
- I can explain predator-prey relationships.
- I can explain the difference between mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism in symbiotic relationships.
- I can distinguish between a food web and food chain.
- I can describe the interdependence of endangered species and other organisms in an environment.
- I can analyze technological research about what happens in an ecosystem when new producers are introduced.
- I can explain the relationship between producers and consumers within an ecosystem when a new producer is introduced.
- I can explain how energy flows through an ecosystem.
- I can investigate change in an established model of an ecosystem over time (e.g., terrarium, aquarium).
- I can design experiments to observe what actually happens when one species is changed in an ecosystem.
- I can illustrate a food web and food chain to explain how energy flows through an ecosystem.
- I can design and build a self-sustaining ecosystem (e.g., terrarium, aquarium) which takes in consideration the size of the container, the location to create the proper temperature, light and humidity, and organisms that will support one another.
How can we help our planet?
Can you do this?
- I can explain that all living things need energy to sustain life.
- I can explain how sunlight is used through photosynthesis and then passed to other organisms.
- I can explain that sunlight is the major source of energy.
